Foreign Divorce Opinion Letter - The first step to re-marrying in Ontario I am approached by people who have been divorced outside of Canada, and are now seeking to re-marry in Ontario and require a foreign divorce opinion letter from an Ontario lawyer. I can bring you one step closer to your goal of re-marrying in Ontario by providing you with an opinion letter on the recognition of the validity of your foreign divorce in Canada. A foreign divorce opinion letter must be submitted to obtain an authorization from the Ontario government before a marriage license can be obtained to marry in Ontario. In preparing an opinion letter regarding the foreign divorce, I assess and determine whether the client's divorce would be considered valid as per Canadian law. A divorce from another country is valid in Canada if when you obtained your divorce, you had a “real and substantial” connection to the place where you obtained the divorce; or when you obtained your divorce, either you or your spouse had been resident in the place that granted the divorce for a year. If you obtained an “quickie divorce” in a place that does not have residency requirements or you had no connection with that place, chances are your divorce will NOT be recognized in Canada. Divorces obtained by fraud or through coercion are also not recognized. You must send the foreign divorce legal opinion letter that I provide you along with your divorce certificate (and a certified translation if it is not in English or French), completed marriage licence application and completed Statement of Sole Responsibility to: The Office of the Registrar General,P.O.
