Established
in 1885 by two employees, James Steele manufactured coiled wire springs and
other steel products. The steel market evolved substantially over decades. By
1897, Steele developed a front bumper for the front of Sleeman streetcars that
saved many pedestrian lives. Because of the “catcher’s” success, streetcar
lines all across North America adopted this device. As Steele’s business grew,
it migrated to bigger facilities including two locations on Woolwich Street.
Under the direction of his two sons, in 1926, the business moved to the former
Raymond Sewing Machine plant which is now the Baker Street parking lot in
downtown Guelph.
Building
the business slowly, James Steele was committed to providing innovation and quality
to his clients. By the end of his career, he was classified as an
industrialist, and although modest in size, this would become one of Guelph's
longest lived industries.
Today,
Steele Bros. Limited is located on Johnson Street in central Guelph, which is
an hour west of Toronto, in a 15,000 square foot facility. Using all the latest
quality control techniques in manufacturing, as well as superior materials, Steele
Bros. is meeting and exceeding the strict demands of clients all across the
continent.
